Dresses have become increasingly popular in the work place in recent years with options available for a wide variety of office environments.  Jacket dresses are even replacing or an alternative to skirt suits.  Some of the most popular contemporary and modern classic designer lines available in plus-sizes are tailored to the needs of the plus-size career woman.  As work place dress codes have relaxed, some women prefer softer and less tailored looks, as well. Dresses are often a good choice for job interviews when suits are not required.

Easily found in many of the better department stores and websites such as Zappos, these labels include Calvin Klein, Tahari, Ralph Lauren, Vince Camuto, and DKNY. Also look for moderately priced designer labels such as Anne Klein, Jessica Howard, and London Times. Lord and Taylor and Dillard's tend to offer more conservative jacket dress styles in addition to classically tailored sheath dresses from names such as Vince Camuto, Calvin Klein, and Ralph Lauren in size 14 to 24W.

Nordstrom continues to offer one of the deepest selections with styles ranging from moderately priced contemporary style labels to more tailored options in size 0 to 24W.  Truly upscale designer looks in misses sizes 12, 14, 16, and 18 are also regularly stocked here out in the main collection, in addition to more moderately priced labels with extended misses sizing.  Look for St. John, Maggy London, and Ellen Tracy to name a few.

The most upscale, designer labels to look for include Lafayette 148, Marina Rinaldi, and some looks from Eileen Fisher.  The best resources for these dresses are Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue in size 14 to 24W.

The classic career clothier Jones New York is available in women's sizes not only through their own website, but also from Dress Barn, Bloomingdale's, and Macy's in size 0 to 24W.  Meanwhile, dresses from Liz Claiborne are regularly available at QVC in size S to 3X.

Classic clothiers such as Talbots and Coldwater Creek consistently offer styles in natural fibers, often with more tailored lines for sizes up to 24W.  More moderately priced options, including selections of jacket dresses are regularly available from retailers such as Old Pueblo Traders and Draper's and Damon's for sizes up to 28W, including a limited number of plus petites.

Fashion forward women who like more body conscious styles will appreciate the new collections found at Eloquii and trend-conscious retail chain Ashley Stewart,  both of which specialize in designer for plus figures wih sizing available from 12 to 26W Also upping their game with stylish career options is Lane Bryant with a deeper selection of career appropriate dresses available on-line than in most retail locations in size 14 to 28W.  Recent designer capsule collaborations have been especially good for work appropriate style dresses.

New York & Co offers contemporary work styles with the dresses from the Eva Mendes collection especially popular with women who like a softer, vintage inspired style to their tailored work clothes.  Sizing here is 0 to 18.

Extended Sizes

Meanwhile women wearing larger than size 24W will find moderately priced options from Catherine's which has been increasing stylish work appropriate options with a more contemporary edge in recent years for size 16 to 34W.  Frequent on-site sales and mark downs make Avenue a particularly budget conscious option for women size 14 to 32W.  Jacket styles, knits, and contemporary cuts and prints characterize most of their selection.

Indie designer Kiyonna is best for jersey wrap and faux wrap styles in classic solid colors such as red, black, and navy blue in size 10 to 32W. Those who like a vintage twist to their career wear will appreciate the selection at eShakti in size 0 to 36W with customizations for necklines, sleeves, and hem lengths regularly offered for a very small fee.

Bargain Shoppers

For upscale bargain shoppers who appreciate high quality but can't afford high end price tags,  both Saks Off Fifth and Neiman Marcus Last Call are gold mines for plus-size career wear.   Both offer more moderately priced labels at discount, as well, sometimes from brands unavailable on their main website.  A similar situation exists with Nordstrom Rack, making all three of these spots worth visiting separately from the main flagship sites.
