Founded in 1984, Eileen Fisher is one of the best
known eco-fashion designer labels available in
larger size (Size S to 3X). Concerned with
issues such as Fair Trade, sustainable and
organic growing processes, and natural dyes or
un-dyed garments, they've acquired a following
of upscale women who believe in and actively
seek out ethical, environmentally friendly
fashion. The garment repair program, be it
lost buttons or moth holes, is enormously
popular -- and free of charge to customers,
encouraging investment dressing and wearing
garments as long as possible.
In an industry where 97% of the production
occurs overseas, Eileen Fisher has five
manufacturing facilities in the United States
where they are able to fulfill twenty percent of
their production needs, and are looking for ways
to bring more manufacturing home in ethical
ways.
Pieces are available in both knits
and wovens in natural fibers
ranging from organic cotton, silk, linen, wool,
and hemp. Wools are often
more luxurious with alpaca, merino, and cashmere
common. A few rayon (one of the few
natural synthetic fibers) styles are available
here and there. In addition to core black,
white, and neutrals, other color palettes are
introduced seasonally according to current
trends and can range from saturated brights to
soft pastels.
Carried by many luxury department
stores,
company stores, and boutiques alike, lines are clean,
modern, and minimalist. It is a popular brand
with women who wear a variety of styles as core
basic building blocks that can mix-and-match
with both classic, modern pieces,
and more artsy and bohemian styles
with equal ease. Originally conceived with
a more comfort-driven bohemian spirit the brand
has
becoming more fashion forward in recent years
with pieces appealing to younger, hipper
customers.
Predominantly relaxed,
casual silhouettes that make fantastic weekend and
resort wear, a few select pieces are dressier,
especially during the holiday party season and
may include specialty finishes, sequins or
beading. The
relaxed weekend feel of many pieces combined
with the natural fibers in knits make Eileen
Fisher popular resort and vacation wear. Pieces
of the collections also work well for career women,
especially many of the classic, black pant
styles, knit cardigan jackets, and silk tops.
Trendier and more fashion
forward styles have also been appearing in
recent months. Many pieces have a toned
down, modified lagenlook feel and can be
layered to create a variety of looks. Slimmer
cut pieces such as skinny black leather
leggings, form fitting tank tops, and slim cut
pants give curvy fashionistas the tools to
create stylish, long over slim silhouettes that
compliment their figures without drowning them.
