With 75% of U.S. women working outside the home, and 65% wearing a size 12 or larger, it's no surprise that plus-size career clothes are among the most sought after. In spite of gender pay gaps, and weight stigmas and related biases in hiring practices noted by researchers, there are women at every level in every field who wear larger clothing sizes. That our media renders these women almost invisible is problematic in our perceptions, but reality is that full-figured women are here and need to put their best, professional foot forward just like any other woman in the work place.

Depending on the work environment, career clothing can be bright and colorful separates following trends in less body conscious designs, or tailored and conservative business suits for more formal professions.  Designer clothing for executives in luxury fabrics, suits, and tailored separates can be especially difficult to find, while more casual styles worn in less formal offices and positions more readily available.  Dresses, in addition to separates, have become more popular than suits in many work places in recent years for all age brackets.

Blazers and jackets have come back into style, offering structured options to cardigans and worn as separates over both pants and skirts.  Many double their use as weekend chic over jeans, as well.  Classic black career trousers are a wardrobe staple for many, extending wardrobes as easy mixing pieces with many other items. The time-tested advice to buy the best black career trousers that you can afford as a core wardrobe investment is still well worth following. These closet classics can be expensive but better bridge and high-end designer pieces fit exceptionally well and wear forever.  Most find that on a per wear basis, these luxury investment items often work out costing less than trendier counterparts.

Shoes and accessories are often where career women of all sizes are able to put their personal stamp on business looks. Designer shoes and bags are popular with affluent executives, while others will often choose looks inspired from the more upscale labels in classic styles. Shapewear and hosiery are musts for many professional women who want finished and polished looks.

Job Interview Clothing Choices

Job interview looks tend be more conservative, even for fields and offices that are generally more relaxed once hired. While not everyone needs to wear a tailored suit, erring on the understated side for the industry in which you work is usually advised. Dark suits in classic black or navy are still an interview staple in many industries. Skirt suits are often preferred, although in some fields a pant suit is fine.

Blouses, scarves, jewelry, shoes, and bags are the way to introduce personality, color, and texture to basic suiting and can be a useful tool for adding stand-out flare in an interview situation. However, unless interviewing in a creative field, flamboyance is best saved for post hire.
